SPRING is here, and everywhere I drive I see council workers grafting very hard to cut the grass that has grown wild over winter.
The long-overdue-to-be-cut grass has been a popular gripe at subcouncil meetings. I am sure in an effort to subdue residents along the M3 highway, the City of Cape Town has employed countless council workers to cut the grass and thus temporally solve the problem ? until a few months down the line when the grass will inevitability sprout roots again.
It makes me wonder: Why does the city spend so much time and money to solve a problem that will definitely come back again? Is there not a better way to deal with it so that all the time, effort and money spent on cutting grass could be better spent on solving some other problems?
My allergies have been wreaking havoc on me, so I am probably one of the few people who are not happy to see these workers cutting down the fields of grass and having the bits of hay-like matter wafting about in the air.
On a much smaller scale, I have a similar gardening issue at home. Sandy soil, poor gardening abilities and very little time has caused my garden to look very similar to the unkempt patches around and about the city.
Since I procured my postage stamp sized piece of property eight years ago, I have been on a mission to successfully grow a beautiful lawn of grass in front of my house.
Time and time again, even though I have spent so much time and money trying to grow something green, this venture has proven unsuccessful. I have also since discovered that I am allergic to some types of grass.
This recurring problem has led to a revelation: Maybe it's time to try something different.
During this holiday, I plan pave my garden. This means no more patchy grass problems and no more hay fever due to the patchy grass.
I must admit I feel proud that I have found a solution to my gardening hassles. Additionally, this means I am freed up to tackle some other issues that have been on my agenda for a while.
There is a saying that a sign of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result every time.
I guess the moral of this story is: Don't waste time on repeating old mistakes. If the way you are doing something is not working, maybe it is time to try something else.
Then you can focus your time and energy on dealing with the things in your life that really matter.
