    Toyah talks... 4 December
    Toyah Lord

SOMEONE once told me that the virtue of friends isn't finding the perfect person, but by loving the imperfect person perfectly. To this I would have to agree, as no one person is perfect.

But how often do we love the imperfect person perfectly? As friends we often expect our friendships to be perfect. We place high expectations on the ones we love, and when things fall apart as they sometimes do, we are crushed. If your life is anything like mine, it always happens to be the people we least expect to hurt us who end up hurting us the most. That said, sometimes life also pleasantly surprises us with friends who we least expect to be there for us.

I say this because I experienced a similar situation after my recent back operation. Yes, I had that one particular friend who I most expected to be there for me who decided to be null in void instead, but I also found myself to be inundated with endless visits, phone calls and messages of other friends, old friends, new friends, work friends, childhood friends, and even friends of friends.

Surprisingly the support that I have received, and am still receiving, has been endless ? a support system without which I am not entirely sure I would have made it through this.

So to these people: I thank you.

It takes only one such situation as I have just experienced to understand the true importance of friends and the ones we love. Life would not be the same without them. I would not be the same without them.

So to each and everyone of you (friends), until next week, I leave you with a poem I once wrote about friends ? a poem that was once written for you. "Friends, what are they really? Someone to laugh with and talk to freely. A person who understands, who will always be there, like two matching souls who are an inseparable pair. A person who excepts both your good and bad tide, loves you forever and will stick by your side. A friend for life, a person who will stay, love you no matter what in their own special way."
