    Cash for the community

A FARM community project in Elgin will be one of the beneficiaries of prize money won by The Company of Wine People (CWP), a local wine producer and exporter.

The CWP won the JF Hillebrand Supply Chain Partner of the Year Award for 2008 and a cheque for R18 000 for its "positive, but critical involvement in the further development" of the program. CWP has been a pioneer in JF Hillebrand's Supply Chain Management program since its launch in 2002.

Currently CWP is involved in the program with five retailing importers in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and in 2007 shipped almost 250 000 9-litre equivalent cases through the program. It has recognised the value of the Supply Chain Management program and used it to optimise their internal operation to satisfy customer demand. In 2007, CWP showed great improvement in the reliability of its operation that resulted in 100% in-time shipments in the second half of 2007.

CWP supply chain manager Buks van Rooyen says he is grateful to JF Hillebrand for pioneering the award in wine supply chain, which covers a broad spectrum involving all possible stake holders in all countries where the program is active, whether a service provider, a wine buying retailer or a supplier. "The program certainly has positively exposed us to a better understanding of the international supply chain of wine and the requirements of our clients," he says.

    'Great commitment'
According to JF Hillebrand supply chain management MD Rob Turvey, CWP has "consistently shown great commitment and flexibility in resolving challenges".

The prize cheque of R18 000 will be used to enhance and develop two grassroots farm community projects in Elgin run by Thandi Wines' business unit.

CWP is one of SA's top wine producers and exporters.

Its core brands include Kumkani the king of South African wines; Thandi, the world?s first Fairtrade accredited wine; handcrafted Welmoed; unconventional Versus and export success Arniston Bay.

JF Hillebrand is the leading specialist logistics provider for wine and spirits imports to the UK and, as part of the JF Hillebrand group, with 1 100 staff in 43 offices around the globe.
