    'Local businesses need support'
    26-06-2008

"THERE is no doubt that many local businesses are seeking more and more support as they fight for survival in today's difficult economic times," says Jim Yeomans, chairman of the Helderberg branch of the Cape Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in his latest newsletter.

Yeomans says the past six months have produced some tough commercial and industrial challenges, such as load-shedding, fuel price increases, municipal rates increases and a barrage of legislation, that have impacted on every single business.

The organisation is intent on putting together a plan where it can be of better service to its members, in the light of the challenges they have experienced.

Yeomans says the Chamber has at least received some clarity on issues such as progress in construction of Cape Town Film Studios, formerly Dreamworld; as well as the N2 by-pass through the Strand and Somerset West and proposed tolling, to which the Chamber is opposed.

Another issue that remains a concern for the Chamber is the marketing of the region as a tourism destination.

"If you are in the tourism or hospitality industries, the uncertainty about the recent decisions regarding the withdrawal of funding for Cape Town Routes Unlimited, and focusing only on Cape Town Tourism, by Helen Zille, must be a cause for concern, particularly as we at the Helderberg Chamber feel we do not figure as a priority in the thinking of the Cape Town Metro policies," says Yeomans.
