Snoek 'manne' reap a big silver harvest
    09-08-2002

Charging bull: Strand hooker ?Pinky? Stuart Williams bears down on his opposition like a charging bull in his team?s match against Hands and Heart, played on Saturday. Strand won the match 17-5.

During the past weekend both Buffels Bay and Hout Bay produced plenty of snoek, and on Saturday, close to 60 boats went out at Buffels Bay, with most of them reporting catches of up to 100 fish per man.

One boat, Wildehans, had 1 300 snoek aboard on Saturday and most of the fish were medium to large and in good condition.

On Monday, the fish ran well off Hout Bay and once again boats had excellent snoek catches. Boatmen are still getting good prices for their fish - R20 per fish at the quay and between R30 and R35 a fish at the Strand jetty.

On Monday morning, local boats fishing off the Macassar banks had some good catches of Red Roman and other bank fish.

The water is still slightly cold, but the colour looks right for kob.

The Gansbaai and Hermanus areas are still yielding good catches of Geelbek, and Flippie Schoeman and his crew reported good Geelbek catches from here as well as a few snoek which were caught among the Geelbek there.

The Gordon's Bay Boat Angling Club's Over 50 Boating Competition was called off last Saturday due to bad weather.

On Saturday, August 10 the Western Province Inshore League will be held and on Saturday, August 17 the South Leg of the Inshore League will be held from Kleinbaai.

Earl Fenwick, who spent the last two weeks at Port St John, said that the fishing there had not been good at all and the rivers in the area were flooding due to all the snow, causing really muddy water.

He said that only a few 'diehards' managed to catch one or two leer-fish and kob.

The water temperature around Strand and Gordon's Bay is still a little too cold for really good shore angling results, although it has subsided quite substantially.

One or two Dassie were caught from the old Gordon's Bay harbour wall.

Cari Steele-Boe, also fishing from the harbour wall, made an interesting catch of a fish called a mini-kob, which is seldom seen in our waters.

    Non-descript fish
He released the fish, which attains a length of 23cm and has a slightly swollen snout.

It is also known as a small kob (Klein Kabeljou) or as a Nondi (short for non-descript) in the East London area, where it is regularly caught. The fish is listed at 199.6 in Smith's book and its Latin name is: Johnius Dussumieri.

Despite the water temperature, some fairly good catches were reported from locals fishing at Hangklip, where some large galjoen were caught around the Stone House. Anglers fishing there said that they were hampered by the many crayfish that came into Hangklip Bay as the water was much calmer than outside the bay.

There were also good catches of steenbras and galjoen on the Hermanus Plaat during the weekend and it is encouraging to hear about larger steenbras of up to 12kg also caught on Struisbaai Plaat.

Anglers who have recently returned from fishing trips to Namibia have asked me to tell anglers planning on fishing there in the near future to make sure that their insurance policies include pay-outs if fishing tackle is stolen while in another country.

Anyone interested in the use of vehicles on beaches and who would like to contribute to the SA Shore Angling Association's fund to fight the ban on vehicles using beaches may deposit money in the following account: First National Bank, SA Shore Angling Association No. 2 account, Account number 62036820761, branch no. 261050.

Then there is the story of the big one that did not get away.

Somerset West surfers Chris van der Merwe and his sister Lynette Geraghty and friends were doing a spot of casual fishing and relaxing at the Still Bay Lagoon mouth after surfing. Lynette was fishing for harders with a light rod and tackle and a tiny hook when a big fish grabbed the bait and took off.

She tried to fight the fish for a while and then handed the rod over to her brother.

After an hour-long battle and hoping that the line would not break, he landed the monster 23kg kob.

To get the fish onto land, he waded into the water and scooped it up in his arms. He carried it to shore, much to the amusement of onlookers who had gathered to watch.
