Child abuse centre wins international award
    08-05-2008

THE Helderberg Child Abuse Centre, better known as PATCH, recently received international recognition from a Dutch organisation, "Business Gala of Businesses and Indentified Charities".

The organisation held a competition to reward the hard work being done by charities worldwide and the first prize of 7 500 Euros (about R87 000) was awarded to PATCH earlier this year. PATCH, an acronym for "Prevention and Treatments of Child Abuse in the Helderberg", helps victims of abuse or rape aged from 0 to 18 years, 24 hours a day at any of their eight satellite care centres in the Helderberg.

The Somerset West Unit Manager, Ada Buys, explained that they presently have a staff of two full-time and three part-time social workers who assist her in the day to day running of the organisation. In addition, two social auxiliary workers do the blood tests and HIV testing on a 24 hour basis and tow life-skill workers run regular programmes at farms and schools for children aged from 12 to 16 years and willing volunteers assist with the important administration duties.

Until recently, all running costs were obtained from donations by service clubs, the community and businesses who have been very generous.

Lately, funds for some salaries have been made available through a subsidy from the Department of Social Development, which is a great assistance in them maintaining their present uncompromising standard of perfec-tion. The Somerset West Rotary Anns have raised funds for PATCH for several years and made or purchased many essential items which PATCH requires for running such an organisation.

On Monday, April 21 the Rotary Anns presented Ada Buys and social worker Lizelma Olivier with box of soup for victims under treatment as well as a flat screen monitor with a built-in DVD player which will be used by the life-skill workers during their educational courses at farms and schools.

Children's plastic chairs, used during interviews, as well as a vacuum cleaner for their offices were also handed over.

    'Other obligations'
During Ada's speech of appreciation for the donations, she said: "It's amazing that the community can keep an organisation like PATCH afloat, especially during these times when contributors have many other obligations". The six satellite units run by PATCH are situated in Macassar, Gordon's Bay, Strand, Lwandle/Nomzamo, Sir Lowry's Pass and Broadlands Park.
