IT was in true De Beers's spirit and character that De Beers beat Norway Park 1-0 in an exciting and physical league encounter at a wet and windy home ground last weekend.
Against all odds and having lost 3-1 to the same team in the quarter finals of the Cup two weeks earlier, De Beers came out determined to win.
They scored early in the first half with the only goal of the match coming from a well worked midfield build up and finish by striker Darel Smith.
The solid and committed defence of Mario Bougaard, Craig Porter, Wayne Arlow (captain) and Jovan Fourie, making his debut, kept the Norway Park strikers at bay with the De Beers goal keeper Brandon Graham, having little to do with very few attempts on his goal.
The game progressed into a very physical encounter with many off-the-ball incidents almost spoiling the contest.
De Beers however showed great resolve and discipline by not being intimidated by the Norway Park players and supporters.
The second half was also not without incident. A hamstring injury to defender Javon Fourie 30 minutes from full time saw De Beers having to defend their lead with only 10 players, this due to a technicality with the players card system that did not allow for a substitute.
Goal scorer Darel Smith was also red carded with 20 minutes remaining on the clock and De Beers were down to nine players.
Ongoing pressure by De Beers saw them being awarded a penalty with five minutes remaining, after midfielder Luyanda Tom Peter was brought down in the penalty area, he was however unable to convert the penalty into a goal.
After such a great team effort it was inevitable that the Altech Autopage Somerset West man of the match award would be shared by the team.
New structures
De Beers have struggled for a decent result over the past few weeks, but new structures recently put into place are starting to yield results.
Newly appointed first team coach, Mark Lansdell, said: "The boys played with great commitment and made me extremely proud, this performance underpins the approach and commitment of the De Beers club to football and the community.
"The first team players and coaching staff are proud to be associated with the club and its structures and we look forward to cementing our dominance in the district.
"Special thanks must go to the loyal supporters who braved the bad weather to watch the game as well as those that have continuously shown their support and commitment to the De Beers first team."
