Helderberg pipped at the post again
    180708

HELDERBERG'S SUPER LEAGUE A encounter was a great disappointment as they lost 27-28 to Tygerberg at the Charles Morkel Stadium.

When will Helderberg learn to play for the full 80 minutes of the match?

Helderberg had the wind to their advantage in the first half, but did not seem to notice this and conceded two soft tries and in the process trailed 14-3 at the break.

Their only points were from a lone penalty goal at the start from fullback Ian Coetzee.

The halftime huddle restored focus for Helderberg and soon after the break centre Stephan du Toit tore through the Tygerberg defence for a scintillating try next to the posts. Ian Coetzee's conversion was successful (14-10).

Next left winger Christo Southey, who turned 20 during the week, showed his speed by outpacing his opposite number and the fullback to cross in the corner for Helderberg to take the lead 15-14. This lead was however short lived as Tygerberg slotted over a penalty goal 17-15.

Helderberg's nippy scrumhalf, Breyten Isaacs broke from behind a maul to run through the defence all along the touchline for a brilliant try which changed the score to 20-17.

Tygerberg was awarded a penalty and drew level (20-20) before they retook the lead with an unconverted try (25-20).

Now a rampant Helderberg returned to Tygerberg territory with some fine driving forward play.

Replacement scrumhalf Werner Williams came close to scoring, before hooker JG Giliomee crashed over the line near the posts.

Ian Coetzee easily converted for his team to lead 27-25. With time running out, Tygerberg took play deep into Helderberg's half and they were awarded a penalty which was converted and won them the game.

For Helderberg flanker Gary Williams played a blinder and together with locks, De Wet Neethling and JP Liebenberg, dominated line-out possession.

In the backline centre, Stephan du Toit, left wing Christo Southey and scrumhalf Breyten Isaacs impressed, showing superior commitment.

This week Helderberg will finally play the outstanding fixture (since April 5) against UCT and it must be said that Helderberg will have to lift their game considerably to have any chance of points (or a point) from the match.

    Helderberg's second team returned to some fine form by chalking up a 25-8 win over their Tygerberg counterparts. Other results: Helderberg III 20 - Tygerberg 0, Helderberg u/20 A 15 - Tygerberg 20 and Helderberg u/20 B 17 - Milnerton A 0.
