    Koos Sas is back
    01/02/08

David Kramer wrote a song called "Die Ballade van Koos Sas" in 1983 after seeing the skull of Koos Sas displayed in the Montagu Museum. A small musical was created from the song in 2001 which told the story through the eyes of Constable Tonie Swanepoel, Hendrik Skilpad and Koos Sas.

In the same year it won the Slurpie award for the Best New Musical and the De Kat Herrie Award at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival.

Ballade van Koos Sas has now been expanded as a result of the commission by the Suidoosterfees and also explores the issue of grave robbing at the beginning of the 20th century. The production opened this week for a season at the festival in the Artscape/kykNET Theatre. The story of the infamous Koos Sas, South Africa's last outlaw, stars Loukmaan Adams as Koos Sas, Jody Abrahams (Hendrik Skilpad), Nicholas Ellenbogen (Scotti Lennox), Robert Koen (Tonie Swanepoel/Ds Steenkamp) and Natalie Cervati (Lenie).

Tickets cost R80. Performance times vary during the festival. Book at Computicket, Dial-a-seat on (021) 421-7695, at the theatre or www.computicket.com
