    Music Society hosts recital

    THE Somerset West Music Society's next concert, which takes place in the library hall on Sunday, April 20 at 16:00, is a clarinet recital featuring Matthew Reid accompanied by Pieter van Zyl (piano). The principal works for be performed are Weber's Grand Duo Concertant (opus 48) and Schumann's Fantasiestücke (opus 73).

    Tickets are available at the door for non-members, R30 for adults and R20 for students. Matthew (clarinet) comes from Durban, where his first lessons were with Werner Dannewitz. He won the SASOL and Oude Meester Prizes for instrumentalists in 1986 and studied with Alfred Prinz in Vienna, Guy Deplus in Paris and John McCaw in London. He recorded Peter Klatzow?s Clarinet Concerto with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in 1992, and recently his Sonata with Pieter van Zyl. As well as making regular appearances at the Nassau Centre in Newlands, Matthew and Pieter have given recitals at the Grahamstown and Oudtshoorn Arts Festivals. At Oudtshoorn they recently earned a nomination for the Kanna Award in the category of Classical Music.

    Pianist Pieter van Zyl, obtained his B.MUS -degree (cum laude) at the US, his M.MUS -degree at the University of Port Elizabeth, and his performance licentiate at UNISA (cum laude) and the Royal School of Music. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician, throughout the country and during his ten years overseas stay, gave numerous performances as soloist in London.
