SINCE 2003 when Artscape initiated the Youth Jazz Festival, interest has grown by young jazz musicians eager to be included in the mentorship programme. It culminates in a Jazz Festival on Saturday, June 21 from 15:00 to 18:00 in the Artscape Theatre.
With the spotlight on jazz greats of the future, the festival has a "vintage feel" through the music by composers such as Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Horace Silver and Charlie Parker, interpreted by the fresh young musical talent of ESP Fusion, The Incredibles Brass, Fusion-Settlers High School and South Peninsula High School.
These bands participated in the mentorship programme.
Well-known local jazz artists who formed the judging panel are also this year's mentors and will perform as a band at the festival. They include Melanie Scholtz, Keith Tabisher, André Swartz, Andrew Lilley and Wesley Rustin.
Tickets for this three hour festival cost R30.
Pensioners, students, scholars and blocks of 10 or more R15. Book at Computicket.
