THE proposed new kennels for the Hottentots Holland Animal Welfare Society could become a reality much sooner than expected.
The application for rezoning, special consent and approval of a site development plan for erven 3479, 3480 and 3481 in Mansfield, Gordon?s Bay, was advertised for objections in the daily newspapers on July 18 last week.
This piece of land is situated in the light industrial area of Gordon's Bay, only about one kilometre away from where the present kennels are.
The new kennels will make provision for practical and extra facilities which have long been needed, such as a clinic and operating theatre and also adequate exercise areas. Proper offices and a house for the kennel manager has also been provided for.
Any objections, with full reasons therefore, may be lodged in writing at the offices of the District Manager on the first floor of the Municipal offices in Somerset West on or before August 18. Enquiries may be directed to Lucille Janssens, PO Box 19 Somerset West, e-mail ciska.smit@capetown.gov.za or, fax: (021) 850-4354 or telephone (021) 850-4556.
The forthcoming move and finding of new premises was the topic of heated discussion at the July 5 AGM, when certain members requested that other sites, particularly one near Monkey Town, also be considered for the building of the new kennels. They were told that members were welcome to still give input and make suggestions, although a site had by then been decided on and an application for rezoning had already been set into motion. Finding a new site had been extremely difficult, Terry Cunnington, chairman of the AWS, said in his annual report at the AGM.
"The AWS committee had over the past four years investigated very nearly 20 sites between Sir Lowry's Pass and Macassar. Some were not suitable, others were not available and others too expensive. In a great many cases, the neighbours had been adamant in their objection to the establishment of the AWS anywhere near them." He said when the AWS first moved onto its present site in the Sir Lowry's Pass Road 30 years ago, it was on the basis of a temporary departure only from the rezoning regulations.
Permission for such a departure is valid for only five years and must be regularly renewed.
It is expected that the AWS will have to vacate its present premises before October. The next big headache is what to do with all the animals if the new kennels are not yet built. One of the options is to find temporary foster homes for all the cats and dogs.
