Dr Hilldidge Beer, EberVet Community Veterinary Care, writes: The work of the Animal Welfare staff is never an easy task and their time off is surely sacred and used to replenish their energies tapped during the week.

So it is with great appreciation that I want to say thank you to Sonja Joubert, manager of the AWS, that she took the time to help us on our monthly sterilisation project for P.E.T.S in Gordon's Bay on her weekend off.

We know the animals of the Helderberg do have people on their side that care.

Ek kan ongelukkig nie u naam onthou nie. Dankie dat u bereid was om my te help ten spyte van die feit dat dit beteken het dat u laat was vir 'n afspraak.

Dankie ook dat u my veilig by die huis afgelaai het.

While holidaying in Oudtshoorn recently we experienced car problems, receiving a quote (beyond our means) from a garage in Oudtshoorn in excess of R11 000 to repair the vehicle.

We contacted my brother-in-law, Paul Bunn, in Somerset West who is very knowledgable about motor vehicles, to find our whether the quote sounded reasonable.

He did a few enquiries for us and said our best bet was to get the car back to Cape Town. He hired a trailer in Somerset West and together with my other brother-in-law, Kevin Bedford, drove through the night to Oudtshoorn, loaded the car up, drove all the way back to Somerset West the following day and organised the repairs with contacts in the motor trade.

I have never experienced such kindness and just don't have enough words to thank them both.

Saans as 'n mens op die strande gaan stap, sien jy hoe vele mense die wette oortree, met hul honde op die strand stap en hoe groot, gevaarlike honde sonder leirieme in die water speel, terwyl oumense padgee uit vrees om omgestamp te word. As jy by Dampark oorkant Hoërskool Strand verbyry, sien jy op 'n daaglikse basis hoe kinders en grootmense daar visvang, ten spyte van die bord wat visvang daar verbied.

Maar elke keer as ek terneergedruk wil voel oor alles wat so agteruitgang met vullis wat oral rondlê en wetteloosheid wat oorneem, sien ek ook op 'n daaglikse basis hoe vroue met plastieksakke rondloop en vullis optel.

Jy sien hulle by parke, oop stukke veld, op die strande en in woonbuurte, waar blikke, wegneemhouers, stukkende bottels en vele ander rommel, opgetel word.

Baie dankie aan hierdie naamlose helpers, wat besluit het om die netheid en trots van hul dorp in eie hande te neem. Die wetsoortreders is steeds met ons, maar ten minste doen die publiek iets om die verval te stuit.
