    'It was an incredible experience'
    270608

RIA MARSH from Somerset West writes:

I seldom write to a newspaper, but I badly want to stress how people were blessed giving and receiving at this time. May I echo the sentiments of Wendy Coles (DM 6 June) and DistrictMail's editorial in a previous issue ("Helderberg staan saam in nood").

An incredible experience it was: our people spontaneously joining hands across all colour and denomination boundaries.

Our church youth helped with catering; out younger children were roped in to make and fill a toiletry bag for each of the 200 refugees arriving on the Friday night.

Churches not able to house the folk, supplied huge amounts of food, and took turns with us to serve meals. Clubs collected money at their meetings.

Some of our church folk were available in our hall just about through the night. One chap told how he slept in the kitchen, and was aware of the refugees praying in groups in the night.

And some of those we housed, and are now settled at Harmony Park, have been back these past Sundays to worship with us.

Some of us lost no time finding the negative in this outreach ("Herded like cattle..."), if someone came to remove you from a danger zone, you probably would insist on five-star tourist treatment!

Do go into your study and pray for this situation - it would be time better utilised, I'm sure.

Our whole community offered them warmth and compassion; may their hardships soon be removed completely.
