I am writing to warn the Helderberg community to be aware of a new scam that is possibly going around the area.
This incident happened on Saturday afternoon when my door bell rang and the caller identified himself as an Eskom employee who was coming to "change the bulbs".
Out of curiosity, I allowed him in the block, but met him on the landing outside my flat and enquired further of the nature of his business.
The apparent Eskom employee, (without identification) put down a very shabby looking card?board box which looked as if it contained boxes of bulbs and a rather unusual looking wrapped up plastic bag wedged along side it; and mumbled very incoherently that he had been sent by Eskom to "change the bulbs".
Naturally acting on caution, I did not allow him in and told him I was not interested and he subsequently left the block. My flatmate then proceeded to phone a contact at Eskom to enquire if this service is being offered, and apparently it is not.
I shudder to think of the consequences, especially of people who are caught off guard and the elderly who are such easy targets to these scams.
The SAPS were notified as well, so readers please be on guard, the team consists of three people (a man and two women without a step ladder).
