    The Spider leaves its Web
    070308

Switzerland will be the centre of attention for the next few days with the opening of the renowned Geneva Motor Show. Geneva is the first show of the year in Europe, following the Detroit Show held in January in the USA.

It is also the showcase for European manufacturers and always produces some interesting new models as well as exciting concepts.

One of the main attractions this year must be the new Alfa Romeo 8C Spider.

As with the Alfa 8C Competizione, the Gran Turismo which received resounding global praise, the Spider will initially be produced in a limited edition run of 500.

A product of the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, the new vehicle inherits many of the features of the coupe version. Dramatic exterior sculpted lines, creates one of the most beautiful body shapes of all time.

In the cabin, the Spider uses a lot of composite materials both on the dashboard and internal panels, plus the unique feature of anatomical seats, produced in carbon fibre that can be adjusted according to the physical characteristics of the driver, a feature usually only available in racing variants.

An unusual aspect of the Spider is the design of the soft top, it comprises two overlapping sheets, the external layer is manufactured from a multi-thread textile which is able to withstand the elements, whilst the interior layer has high sound-proofing qualities.

In true performance car style, the Alfa 8C Spider has a light, rigid frame made of steel for maximum torsional integrity, while the body is manufactured of carbon fibre.

This construction reduces the weight and optimises the centre of gravity for better overall balance of the car.

Power comes from the new 90 degree V8 with a capacity of 4 691 cc and delivering 450 bhp at 7 000 rpm and a maximum torque of 7 500 rpm.

Mated to an automatic six-speed gearbox which also allows computerised selection of the gears via levers behind the steering-wheel, final drive is delivered through a transaxle assembly.

The transaxle design creates equilibrium in the distribution of weight to further enhance the Spiders handling characteristics.

Harnessing all the power an excellent braking system is a must, the Alfa 8C Spider is fitted with carbo-ceramic Brembo (CCM) discs, 380 mm in diameter at the front and 360 mm at the rear.

This arrangement guarantees a powerful braking action even under the most extreme conditions.

By using carbo-ceramic discs there is a considerable reduction in weight, in comparison to a traditional set up, reducing the unsprung mass of the vehicle and so improving the dynamic performance and driving comfort.

Furthermore, the use of mono-block callipers guarantees maximum rigidity and minimal deformation, to cope with the high loads generated by the pressure of the pistons on the brake pads.

The whole package rests on specially developed 20" tyres to enhance the performance, tyres are 245/35 up front and 285/35 at the. Perforated rims of cast aluminium ensure lightness and maximum brake ventilation efficiency.

To make sure you will keep your limited edition on the road the Alfa 8C Spider uses an evolved VDC Alfa Romeo traction and stability system, which ensures that the driver feels at one with his car.

Sadly, until the day that the 8C is available in right-hand drive, the sight and sound of the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider on South African roads will remain in our imagination.
