'My cat was murdered by satanists'
    11/04/08

ANIMAL LOVERS have reacted in horror to the cruel, ritualistic torturing and killing of a pet cat in Somerset West ten days ago. Leigh De Gouveia of Heritage Park believes her cat, Gus, was murdered in a satanic ritual. She is offering a R2 000 reward while Anoux Massey of PETS is offering an additional R1 000 for information which could lead to the successful arrest of the person or people who committed this heinous act.

All information received will be treated as strictly confidential.

People can phone Anoux on 076 872 7071 or Leigh on 083 626 4828 with information.

Leigh says Gus went missing on March 29.

"When he hadn't come home on Friday I phoned my neighbour Peggy, as Gus would often pop over to her and play with her cats.

She was concerned as she had not seen Gus either. "On Saturday I phoned her again, but she had still not heard anything. I then started going around the complex and common gardens looking for him."

After putting up posters a neighbour came to tell Leigh she had found a grey, Siamese look-alike cat dead in her garden.

What she found, Leigh says, will haunt her for the rest of her life. Gus was still wearing his collar, name tag and bell, but he had been gutted like a fish. His intestines lay coiled up in a neat little heap nearby.

Leigh took the mutilated corpse to her vet for an autopsy on Friday. "My vet, who has been practising in Somerset West for many years, told me he has never seen anything as shocking as this," she told DistrictMail.

She said he confirmed that Gus had been subjected to torture while alive and finally a terribly violent death.

He was disembowelled and all the skin on the central cavity had been removed along with all his ribs. No internal organs were found nor his ribs. He had incisions running down his legs to his feet and his spinal column was totally exposed.

"It appears as if he had also been burnt as part of this evil ritual or whatever," says Leigh, "as the brush found in the area had been burnt. This all took place in Heritage Park, a quiet, secure estate in Somerset West.

"What is terribly distressing is that most residents here are animal lovers and most have pets." Leigh says neighbours heard a terrible scream on Thursday evening. "That night we were awakened by dogs barking, they must have barked for over an hour. I reported this to the police and local animal welfare groups and to our local newspaper."

Leigh says the police were totally unmoved by the heinous crime. "Gus died and no-one with authority seems to care nor tried to look into it. I fear that some sick person has managed to get away with this and will just carry on." She has since also reported it to the Metro Police, who are investigating the incident.

Leigh says Gus was a very loving cat. "My neighbours knew and loved him. He was a quiet soul, staying home most of the time and occasionally visited aunty Peggy's cats next door. Sadly his loving, trusting nature is what caused him to die. Gus would have been easily lured by this evil person."

"I hope what happened will make people more aware and hopefully Gus's death will help make a difference for the future and not go forgotten."
