Robbers almost "decent"
Magda Martins

Messrs Aaron Marley and Matthew Thatcher were visiting Insp. Michael Beukes from the Carletonville police, and his family last week Monday, when they were surprised by four robbers in their house opposite Jongspan Primary School. The suspects entered the house without anyone inside noticing at about 20:15. “The door was locked, but they managed to come in. The next moment they cocked the weapon and pointed it at me,” says Beukes. His wife, Beverley, son, Lucas (18), and seven-year-old daughter, Anthea, were in the living area together with their visitors when the robbers walked in. “They asked for weapons, cellphones and money. Then they tied me and the Americans up.” They took the computer box, television, Ms Beukes’s hand bag, two wallets, rings, money and a watch. Everything is worth about R10 000. “They were not aggressive. You could say they were almost decent,” says Beukes. “My daughter was very upset with the robbers. It looked as if she was not even scared. We started to pray out loud just to keep her calm,” says her father. “We cannot live like this. It was terrible to feel so vulnerable and know that my family is in danger. It only took between ten and fifteen minutes. And although we know we cannot let this affect our lives, it does change one’s lives.” Marley and Thatcher say it was a scary experience. “But it was an inconvenience as well.” At about 02:15 two robbers entered Mr Sekhaolela’s house in Anthracite Street. He was sleeping. “The robbers fired a shot and took off with electrical appliances,” say the police. No one was arrested.
