VANDERBIJLPARK. - It is generally viewed that education is the key to success, but the Sedibeng District West D8 seems to differ from this opinion.
Apparently D8 is the worst performer of all the education districts in Gauteng. This can be seen in the light of their overall results of last year and this year?s mid-year results.
Other complaints are in terms of performance and management. The last issue in D8 was about a teacher who used a hot knife to burn 24 Letsema Illima Primary School children in their necks and faces.
Payanza Lesufi, spokesperson of the Gauteng Department of Education, says that the department investigated the overall results of the D8 last year and confirms its poor performance. "We reached the decision of redeploying the entire management of the district, because the manner in which affairs were managed in the district is discouraging," he says. Lesufi adds that the provincial department will use a turnaround-strategy to ensure that the district performs better.
Vaal Weekly's efforts to speak to Dan Thinane, D8 director, were futile, as he is apparently on leave and has nothing to say to the media.
* Meanwhile, D7 teachers have issues regarding the new management that was sent to them from D8. One educator, who chose to remain anonymous, says, "How can the department send someone from such a poor performing district? The department failed us".
