Taxi violence leads to six arrests
By Mduduzi Mathebula

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Six suspects have been arrested after a shooting that took place at the Vanderbijlpark Taxi Rank last Wednesday.

This shooting is allegedly imbedded in the ongoing taxi dispute between the Vanderbijlpark Taxi Association and the disbanded United Taxi Association (Lebota).

According to a street vendor selling in the area, a suspicious looking private car and two taxis drove up to the rank's entrance just prior to the shooting. "The next thing I heard shouting of gunshots and I went for cover. Before the shooting, I overheard one man warning that he is going to shoot," she says. Shots were fired through the windows of the taxis, but luckily no passengers were injured.

Vanderbijlpark Taxi Association's chairperson, Stompie Mali told Vaal Weekly that they suspect that the shooting has something to do with a recent court ruling favouring the Vanderbijlpark Taxi Association in operative routes for taxis.

The Police Spokesperson Mzimkhulu Mthimkulu confirms that six suspects were arrested and he says that a case of taxi violence and damage to property has been opened.
