If one could count the number of times that family relationships have been broken by drunkenness, this number would be unbelievably big.
This week Vaal Weekly covers an incident whereby a wife, angry at her husband who was gallivanting at a shebeen, stabbed him to death. One wonders if this enraged woman had any idea that she could turn into a murder. The incident is sad, however what is done is done and it cannot be reversed.
Once again, the issue of drinking seems to have been the root of this horrifyingly tragic situation.
It is peculiar that a lot of critical injuries and fatal fights and accidents happen at shebeens and taverns. This is a definite link that shows that alcohol and heated tempers cannot and should not be mixed at all. Only a few weeks ago, a Zamdela shebeen queen was reported to have assaulted her clients because they refused to buy alcohol from her. These two are only two of the many tragedies that befall people at these places.
Currently government and other structures are busy trying to combat the problem of illegal shebeens and taverns that seem to be popping up at every corner, but these efforts are sure to prove futile without the backing of community members.
This is because it is these very communities that have to be roleplayers in the transformation of their areas of living into something to be reckoned with.
In the first instance, it does not make a good impression when any township is filled with shebeens all over the place. Secondly, these places can often be breeding hubs for criminals who are prepared to prey on unsuspecting drunk victims.
This poses a very real danger to customers, especially those who are underage. It is about time that people give a second thought to the consequences when they drink. They should make sure that they are well taken care off after a drinking spree.
Like they always say: It is imperative to drink responsibly.
