Running to the future
By Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - The newly formed Sedibeng Athletics Club is the latest club to commit itself in the development of the sport in the Vaal.

In the past, Vultures and Lekoa Athletics Club were the only two pacesetters in the development of up and coming runners. That is until the Sedibeng Athletic Club came into the picture.

The club surprised many when they introduced a number of youngsters from four-years-old upwards during the Cross-Country Championships that were held at the Isak Steyl Stadium recently. At the event, the youngsters showed a lot of potential and certainly gave their opponents a tough time.

Weekly Sport is not surprised to see the club showing as much faith in these young athletes as it is, seeing as living athletics legend, Moses Rachaka, is involved in the club. To date, Rachaka was one of the most feared marathon- and track-and-field runners to have emerged from the Vaal. Some of the teams he ran for include the Liberty, Mr Price and Mittal athletic clubs.

The 35-year-old maestro told Weekly Sport that the club is committed to the development of the sport by introducing new talent. "We want to start developing these kids at an early age so that they can live up to their potential. We have a line-up of some interesting development programmes and I can tell you that these youngsters have a great future ahead of them. It is difficult to work with kids of this age, but what I like of them is that they listen when someone talks to them. I enjoy being around them and I also learn a few things from them," says Rachaka.

He says, however, that the biggest challenge that the newly formed club faces is sponsorship. Rachaka therefore urges anyone likely to assist with donations to do so and make the club a force to be reckoned with.

He also invites up and coming runners interested in joining the club to attend training sessions at the Zone 7 Stadium at 16:00 from Monday to Sunday.
