ZAMDELA. - The ANC Women's League (ANCWL) and the community are in shock after a 90-year-old granny was allegedly raped and stabbed several times by a 19 year-old suspect in Sommerspot recently.
The incident occurred while the woman was sleeping in her house, which is only a few residences away from where the suspect lives. The daughter of the victim says that on the night of the incident, they found her mother lying in her bed, stabbed with a sharp instrument. She says that they also saw the suspect fleeing from the house.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where she received stitches for her wounds and also was treated for shock. Other than being shocked, the community is also infuriated as they claim that police arrested the suspect, only to release him again without gathering enough evidence.
However, police spokesperson Fikiswa Matoti says that the suspect was arrested and appeared in court, but adds that the case was temporarily withdrawn due to a lack of evidence.
ANCWL member and Metsimaholo mayor, Fezi Ngubentombi, and women from different denominations paid the gogo a visit on Sunday.
Mayor Ngubentombi urges the community to join the Community Policing Forum and says that before we all start pointing fingers to the justice system, we should start fighting crime at home.
Sisi Mabe, member of the ANCWL National Executive Committee, says that they are shocked to hear that the case was withdrawn. "The community will never allow such barbaric criminals to turn their area into a no-go zone," she says.
