    Wrong impression created

THE reader Dennis Bartlett is completely wrong in his assumptions that beggars need to be dirty and in old clothing. ‘‘Beggar did not quite look the part” (TB, 16 July.) I was taught that you may be poor, but you can be clean.

The beggars in question are very well known to me and my staff. Bubbles Launderette in Parow helps these poor people by washing the clothing of these two gentlemen and their mother for free. The men and their elderly mother sleep in the backroom of a business and until recently this was on a hard cement floor with only one blanket between them.

We took pity on them and gave them a mattress and some bedding. They are not allowed to stay on the premise and therefore in the morning must leave. On sunny days the mother goes and sits in a nearby park while her sons try to sell little shoe key rings and key pockets that they make, in and around Parow, but when they have not made enough to buy food as on this particular Sunday, they have no alternative but to beg for money.

On rainy days the elderly mother comes and sits in the launderette. This has only happened recently so heaven only knows what they did before.

Mr. Bartlett sitting in his car should really show sympathy to all people and not just assume that because a man is well dressed and clean, he is too lazy to work and there?fore begs for money..

I can assure the readers although these men are not sleeping on the streets, I would not call the place where they stay at night a home. They are indeed homeless as well as unemployed as his board stated.

These people have now become a target and how are they now suppose to get enough money to feed themselves with you printing pictures of them as so-called ‘‘beggars”? Is Mr Bartlett now going to help support their elderly mother because who will now give this so-called “beggar” money after the article?

You need to walk in the shoes of these men, before you condemn them.
