    Killarney promises action
    IAN LITTLE

WITH Saturday’s main circuit meeting at Killarney serving as a build-up for the South African Championship Wesbank Super Series event on 4 November, some close and exciting racing can be expected.

The NA Carrera sports car events have attracted a particularly interesting list of entries and could be among the best.

Dawie Joubert willbe in action in the new Lotus Elize that proved? it could stay with the quickest local sports racing vehicles at the last meeting. Although relatively new on the scene, Joubert has also done well in in gymkhana events and is an asset to local motor sport.

And although his main opposition is expected to come from Peter Little in his extremely fast FvH 7 / Mazda rotary, spare a thought for Supercar champion Neil Hawkins who is having his first outing in the Birkin 7 / Toyota, previously campaigned by Brian Maunder.

Meanwhile the crafty Maunder has entered in a rare Hyundai powered T212 Lola. Although described as no more than a “good” class C entry, the benefit derived from those oily fingers under the bonnet and at the wheel, could easily elevate it to a higher level.

Albert Cook, whose Hawkins Roadster was written off in a spectacular accident at the last meeting, will be making a welcome return in his second car, a Mercedes SLK replica.

The Paarl Motors Classic category has been subdivided into two events for classes A,B & C and another two for classes D,E, F, X and Fine Cars.

Among the drivers expected to do well here are the aggressive Keith Rose in his Porsche 911 RS, Chris Carolin (Mazda Capella rotary) and Trevor Momberg (V6 Ford Capri).

Although Fred Phillips has posted an entry for his magnificent Chev CanAm, he is still awaiting a shipment of tyres for the car, from overseas. Should these not arrive in time he will be seen at the wheel of his recently acquired Rover engined Morgan Plus-8.

Watch out for championship leader Keith Andrews (class D, Alfa Berlina) and veteran Coenrad Spamer (class D, VW Scirrocco?), in the lower Classic category.

The overall tally in the Barnetts Auto Spares Championship would seem to indicate that class C VW Polo driver Clifford George?, is so far ahead that he already has the title virtually sewn up.

Be that as it may, the battle at the head of the pack is more likely? to be fought out between drivers like Jacques Arndt in his Rover SDi, VW super tuner Rob Ferroli (Jetta 3) and Phillip Booysen (16V VW Golf).

Doug McDonald has entered one of his American sourced Fantastic Racing Reynard Dodges? in the single seater Formula Libre category.

Here his main opposition is likely to come from a pair of 2 litre Formula GTi’s handled by Paul Simon and Rico Barlow.

The first of the 14 races on the programme is due to get under way at 10:30. Admission is R30.
