WHILE the schools were closed Sobambisana Community Development devised a plan to keep children busy during the holidays.
The theme of the project was “Lets Play for Fun” and the aim was to take children off the streets by offering them educational fun activities.
Programme co-ordinator Darlene de Jager said they would offer their services every holiday because it was successful.
“We are looking to have holiday programme every school holiday with educational, life skills, cultural activities and camping. The children enjoy the programme and their numbers are increasing everyday. We want to shape them for a good future,” said De Jager.
The children were involved in indoor and outdoor fun activities that consisted of art, board games, drama, karate, soccer and other education related acts.
Volunteers recruited from the surrounding senior secondary schools were of great help with children as they showed them how to do what was expected of them.
Inter Township School of Karate’s Emmanuel Dyantyi who was helping the little ones with kicks said: “We have to encourage them to avoid bad things. The challenge we have in townships is that we do not have equipment for karate. The government must do something to promote karate in township.
Melabantu Mashama, one of the children who attended the programme said:
“It keeps away from joining in criminal activities. We are safe here. I started coming here since 2006 and I enjoy being here. I have a message for the youth to come and join here. They teach us about abuse and drugs.”
The children also get helped with their home works and assignments.
