We must set our goals beyond ourselves
    ZYD MZAMO

I’D like to start my column with these words from the great man Nelson Mandela: “But it’s those without real ambition and drive who are left to work hard in inferior positions for the rest of their lives.”

People without ambition wake up early in the morning before everyone else while it is still dark and cold to catch the first train or bus or taxi to work. They work hard in their inferior positions.

Theirs is no challenge to life. They are told what to do: sent to shops to buy food for the boss. Always complaining that the boss is not a good person. But what can they do? It is better than nothing.

Routinazation! This is what it is called in social sciences.

Throughout their years they do one and the same thing until they are about to die when they confess they wish they had done things differently.

But then it is too late. There is no turning back. They are about to turn in and while alive what had they done worthwhile? Did they make bad decisions? There was one guy who shook me to the core with this.

For a topic he chose “Why Bad Decisions Are Good For You.” We were all shocked. Why choose such a topic? We wondered. But the man said, “Only those who pay attention to the absurd achieve the impossible!”

He gave an example of a guy who did things differently.

Whereas during a high jump competition jumpers approached the bar directly he approached it backwards and broke one record after another.

That is, until other competitors emulated him and broke his record. I’m sure before that everyone laughed at him, but proved them wrong. He made a bad decision and stood out in the crowd!

Ralph Waldo Emerson says: “Conformity is the opposite of courage.” Everyone is so timid. When I talk about my cycle tour I hear all those doubts and obstacles that pop in people’s mind.

“One thousand is too much!” “What about the traffic, how will you control it?” “Will you get candidates to participate in this tour?” I just smile and say to them: “You know what, we have been looking at obstacles.”

“How about looking at the possibilities now!” Like Dr John Demartini, I’m measuring my being by the distant ends and most importantly, respond to my immortal expression and spiritual quest.

To leave a legacy, awaken your immortal self. So many of us are subordinating our dreams to the illusion of pain and pleasure. The most important thing is to set goals beyond ourselves.

    Stay positive.
