    Baseball strikes out for youngsters
    LINDA KABENI

AMERICA’s most popular sport is fast finding a base from which to spread in South Africa.

It is known as baseball and has already begun with a bang in three primary schools and one high school in Guguletu. The schools are Mseki, Vukukhanye, Vuyani and Fezeka.

There are five other baseball teams located in predominantly coloured and white schools.

Seven multicultural teams are already established in the province through the auspices of the South African Baseball Academy.

US national and founder Patrick Lindsey said:“they are bringing the game to places where it never materialised before. We are giving township kids a choice.

“Our aim is targeting vulnerable children from disadvantaged communities especially those who range from ages of eleven to twelve,”he said

Lindsey said they also take them to camps to educate them more about life skills.

“We want to see these children excel in life.

“They can find themselves playing for the Western Province colours which was previously dominated by whites. We are trying to transform this sport to accommodate every sector of our society. It can also be a blessing in disguise for the children to escape poverty.”he said.

He added, “One of the positive spin-offs from the development is that they have achieved about seven black players which are currently playing in the Western Province baseball team. He said the aim of their campaign is to install discipline, to improve grades, attitudes and create a platform where diverse children from different back grounds can share their culture through sport.”

He said there were other programmes that were in the pipeline for the kids. “Line skating, jump rope competition, breakdancing, basketball and American football.” Lindsey said, “they would introduce everything that would see the children escape their hard hit environments.”“These kids are like throwaways.

“We are trying to give them everything that could see them getting supported mentally and physically.

“We are not here to import the American way of life, we are here to make a difference and give these children a choice to make something of their lives,”said Lindsey

His project could never be where it is today with out the generosity of his sponsors which include MWeb and Golden Arrow.
