    New Rotary president

The Rotary Club of Hermanus has just inducted their 61st president - Johan Pretorius.

Johan said in his opening address that Hermanus Rotary would initiate a local or international service project that will help reduce child mortality and continue with the cataract project started last year.

Hermanus Rotary Club has restored the sight of 46 local, indigent patients since the project's inception last May. This is an incredible project done in collaboration with Hermanus Medi-Clinic, Alcon Laboratories and local ophthalmologist Anton van Biljon.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in South Africa, affecting 160 000 of an estimated 250 000 blind people in our country and the waiting list is getting longer by the day. Patients qualify for surgery if they are South African citizens, have best-corrected vision of less than 6/60, earn less than R2 000 a month and have no medical aid.

Guest speaker Adrian Kuiper talked about his cricket career and we all know of his many years of high quality cricket for Western Province that won him selection for the South African XI.

One of his greatest accomplishments was against England, 1989-90 where he hit a century with 49 balls. After his cricket career he has been farming in Elgin and has recently been appointed as Overberg regional manager for Pam Golding Properties.

Another guest present was Judge Deon van Zyl. The surprise of the evening was when local singer Fanie de Jager entertained guests with his incredible voice.

    · Rotary International is an organisation of business and professional persons who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Each year Rotary has an international theme that is the focus of the 1,2 million Rotarians. The theme for this year is “Making Dreams Real” - a focus on children to reduce child mortality.

Currently 30 000 children die per day from preventable causes like diarrhoea, hunger, malaria and dehydration.

If you are interested in joining the local Rotary Club or like to enquire to see if you qualify for the Rotary cataract project, contact Pretorius on 028-312 1277 and not Hermanus Medi-Clinic or Van Biljon.
