Greetings once more, I hope this finds you well and hitting the course with renewed spring vigour. We have definitely noticed an upward turn in the number of golfers coming to the course and a few of our overseas members have started to trickle back to warmer climes. A completely contrasting weather pattern arrived at the start of the week with some brilliant days in between. The definite sporting highlight of late was last week's terrific win of the Boks over the Wallabies, the e-mail picture doing the rounds of Peter de Villiers clutching a book entitled Rugby for Dummies obviously did the trick!
European Tour player rates Hermanus
Great to see the Origins of golf returning to Arabella last week with a strong field accompanying it. Jacobus Roos, fresh from a stint in the U.S. came back and played here, together with well known long hitting Richard Sterne who has been campaigning successfully in Europe. Richard loved the course and commented that our greens are as good if not better than the ones he has been playing on in Europe and went on to say he thought Hermanus was the best Matkovitch course he has played on. High praise indeed from a very respec-ted international player.
Interesting to see how some of the guys battled on the quick Arabella greens, we even had a five putt on the 18th! John Rhodes felt much better upon hearing this.
Inter provincial teams already practising
Great to see some of the inter provincial teams here practising, Eastern province and Boland have been here and Central Gauteng played a friendly against Western Province last Saturday and were treated to some of our more fiesty North winds, they abandoned the match after the first 18 holes when they had a problem balancing their golf balls on their tees! A beautiful comment was heard from the bar when a wind swept team took refuge, Wait until the wind really starts to blow, a mixture of pure terror and stunned disbelief was apparent on the faces of the best team from the North!
Results rundown
I would normally start with the ladies on a Tuesday, take a look at one of our marshalls Daan Beukes and you can appreciate why Tuesday was cancelled, rain, wind, cold......Yuk!
Wednesday however was better for the men and they enjoyed their monthly dose of medal play, every shot counts. We had our fair share of disaster stories, but marching through the lot winning the A division was Werner Heunis on a nett 70, winning the B division was Trevor Schouw with a fantastic nett 66; trying out a new TaylorMade ball I might add, and winning the C division was our friendly committee member Greg Donald on a super 40 points. Well played. Our victor of the day winning the Monthly Mug on a gross 79 was Andre Gouws. Well played guys.
Saturday again turned anti-social weather wise so that's the results of the week!
