In the HESA Spring tournament currently underway, pride of place must go to Junior Bucks, currently lying bottom of Division 2. Last Saturday, they defeated struggling Division 1 outfit, ZUBs 3-2 in a 2nd round match and followed this up later in the day with a 2-1 quarter-final win over Dangerous Darkies, who currently lie 4th in Division 2. Darkies themselves beat 1st Division Black Lion 1-0 in the 2nd round, and 2nd Division leaders Morning Stars triumphed over 1st Division Young Stars, also by 1-0. In last week's column, both of these results were forecast as potential upsets.
The other results of the 2nd Round were: City Leds 4 Star of King 2 : Coastal Utd 1 Eastern Cape 2 : Real Citizen 0 Sweepers 2 : Real Tigers 1 Glen-Grey 2 : Hermanus Utd 2 Mighty Blues 2 (Mighty Blues win on penalties). In the quarter-finals, Junior Bucks beat Dangerous Darkies 2-1, Eastern Cape overcame City Leds 2-1, and Sweepers went through against Glen-Grey 2-1. The 4th quarter-final between Mighty Blues and Morning Stars was postponed because of the deteriorating weather conditions. The semi-finals and final will take place on Saturday and the programme is that both semi-finals will kick-off at 9.00am when Junior Bucks play Eastern Cape and either Mighty Blues or Morning Stars play Sweepers. At 13.30 the two losing semi-finalists play off for 3rd place and the Grand Final will kick-off at 15.00. (All games on Saturday). In Division 1 on Saturday at 12.00, Hermanus Utd take on Super Eagles and a defeat for United would leave them 5 points behind Sweepers with only 3 matches left. Sweepers don?t play this weekend because of their Tournament involvement. Also on Saturday at 12.00, Hot Fire take on XI Defenders in a contest neither club can afford to lose. Hot Fire are 4 points above the drop zone, and XI Defenders are 1 point clear. On Sunday at 13.30, XI Sabham will have to try to get something out of their match against Young Stars if they hope to get out of the bottom two. Perhaps an even more crucial match is at 15.00 on Sunday when bottom club XI Strikers play ZUBs. In Division 2, of the clubs challenging for promotion, only Amaviyoviyo and Dangerous Darkies play this weekend.
Amaviyoviyo should get past Young Leaders to put extra pressure on top dogs Morning Stars (Saturday 12.00) and Darkies need to beat Xhora Celtics in their bid to stay in touch with the top three (Sunday 12.00).
