The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is looking for volunteers and teams for the first ever Relay For Life to be held in Hermanus.
Organisers are holding a meeting at the Wine Village on Friday 1 August at 09:00 to share with residents the importance of Relay For Life in the fight against cancer. Relay For Life is an overnight event consisting of teams spending up to 24 hours walking or running around a track. Relay For Life celebrates survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), funds research and cancer education, inspires the public to become involved in CANSA advocacy efforts, and makes important services possible for patients and their families.
It also creates a sense of community by bringing people together in a moving and fun atmosphere, with sufficient time for cultivating relationships. As a result, community volunteers naturally take ownership, developing and implementing the event.
A Relay For Life committee should reflect the diverse groups within a community to pull those groups of people to the event.
Two highlights of every Relay are the survivorship activities and the Luminaria or Candle of Hope ceremony, each acknowledging those who have been touched by cancer. Teams of 8-15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the country. Members take turns walking or running around a track so that the team has at least one member on the track during the entire time of the event.
Money is raised primarily through team commitment fees, team and individual fundraising, and Candle of Hope donations.
However, much of the time is spent listening to music, camping out, participating in a variety of family and cancer-awareness activities, and most of all, enjoying the company of friends, relatives, neighbours and co-workers.
Volunteers are needed to organise and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in any way.
