In the last couple of weeks several appeals have been made through this newspaper towards a variety of causes, mostly in aid of those in need.

The response has been overwhelming - from people streaming in with goods for the second-hand shop of the Overstrand Hospice, to those giving in cash or kind for the benefit of the destitute in all our communities. Even an appeal to give food and blankets for stray dogs was met with unprecedented support.

Apart from these reactions the local and provincial spheres of government have also not stayed behind in reaching out. Especially Zwelihle residents whose houses were flooded in last week's rains were targeted.

With temperatures plummeting to their lowest levels this winter it is indeed heartwarming that those of us who are in the fortunate position to give to others were willing to stand up and be counted when it really mattered.
