Hermanus Waldorf lives the rainbow dream

The Hermanus Waldorf School in Sandbaai was a hustle and bustle last week when some of its learners enjoyed the privilege of moving into spanking new classrooms.

The new wing at the school was made possible by funding from the German government. The completion of the new classrooms has made more space available for other activities such as art, music and a woodwork room.

Still to be completed as part of this latest R2,5 million expansion at the school is a new hall. It is envisaged that this hall will become a community centre to be used by all the surrounding communities, which in turn will generate much-needed funds for the school.

It costs the school R750 per month per child, but the minimum school fees payable by parents next year will be only R200 per month per child to make it affordable for the surrounding communities. The school has to make up the difference by finding sponsors and donors and other fundraising events, which is not an easy task.

They have started their own vegetable garden and to help feed the hungry tummies, local restaurants provide soup for the school every day of the week on a rotation basis.

But keeping the ship afloat does not come cheap and they need more assistance, says Moore. In the mean time, they are all eagerly awaiting the completion of their new school hall with its very interesting design. And they all work hard at conserving their natural fynbos garden in the middle of the schoolyard.
