WORCESTER Standard Electric Press (WSEP) is a dynamic and successful company that
has been operating in the beautiful, mountainous Breede River Valley since 1880,
the region in the country that produces the most wine.
Every week the company publishes the very popular, growing regional newspaper,
the Worcester Standard, which, together with the WSEP stationery shop and printing
works, comprises the three legs of this Media24 affiliate. Media24 is one of
the big media conglomerates in South Africa.
The Worcester Standard, mainly an Afrikaans pony-sized newspaper, is distributed
in sixteen towns - from Touws River to Ceres to Bonnievale - and its circulation
has grown strongly to 9 430 per week in recent years.
Approximately 50 strong newspapers with an average volume of 28 pages are published
annually.
The first proof edition of the Worcester Weekly News appeared on July 31, 1880,
and was changed to the Worcester Advertiser in 1882. In 1894 an opposition paper,
the Worcester Standard, was founded by Cecil John Rhodes. The two amalgamate
in 1927 and become the Worcester Standard & Advertiser.
The company, presently with just over 50 employees, has been a member of Naspers
since 1980.
The town Worcester, capital of the Breede River Valley, lies on the main route
to and from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, with a wide range of
services and commercial activities. Worcester is a town with a particularly
impressive cultural heritage, and the museums provide a glimpse of the past,
as well as lots of information for the tourist. Surrounded by majestic mountains
and verdant valleys, the town is seated in the biggest wine-producing district
in the country, with 24 co-operative and 3 private wine cellars on the Worcester
Wine Route, as well as 2 Brandy Cellars.
The town has much to see and experience, it is only an hour's drive from Cape
Town and is ideally situated to explore the surrounding towns, vines and valleys
- a real eco-destination nestled between majestic mountain ranges and magnificent
scenery.
