24 000 Easter bunnies killed in NZ

Wellington - It was not a happy Easter for about 24 000 bunnies shot dead in the annual rabbit hunt in New Zealand's South Island, where they are a pest ravaging farmers' pasture.

Organiser Dave Ramsey told Radio New Zealand on Sunday that nearly 23 000 rabbits and 1000 hares were killed in the weekend hunt.

Overnight rain hampered shooters, who had a goal of 25 000 animals, he said.

The hunt has been held every Easter for 20 years, and Ramsay said the rabbit problem is worse than ever, with farmers annually spending up to $40 000 each for pest control, including shooting, poisoning and trapping the animals.
