East London - A 47-year-old man who claimed that 150 plants of dagga he was growing in Cabazana was medicine to relieve his asthma, appeared before Mount Ayliff Magistrate's Court on Thursday
Inspector Mlungisi Matidane said police arrested the man for cultivating the dagga at his homestead on Thursday.
Police were attending to a complaint of theft when they noticed boys smoking dagga.
Police asked the boys where they got the dagga and they told police that their neighbour had given it to them.
The police went to the man's house and found him plowing his field where they found 150 dagga plants with a street value of R4 000.
The man told police he grew the dagga to make muti (medicine) that he used to relieve his chronic asthma.
The man was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for cultivating dagga, said Matidane.
