Astronomers see more planets than stars

2012-01-11 23:05

Washington - Astronomers now think planets outnumber stars in our galaxy. And they've only begun to count.

Thanks to powerful telescopes and a better understanding of different solar systems scientists are finding new places to look for life beyond Earth.

Three studies released on Wednesday shed new light on the diversity of planetary systems. One of the studies estimates that our Milky Way galaxy averages at least 1.6 large planets per star. The Milky Way has an estimated 100 billion stars.

Also, scientists once thought systems with two stars were just too chaotic to include planets. But so far astronomers have found three different systems where planets have two suns. Just a few years ago that idea seemed to be the stuff of science fiction.

I know of a little old planet in the Outer Rim Territories that orbits two stars... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

what are you on about? kepler 34b and kepler 35b orbit thier stars every 290 days or so. they are not in the habitable areas of the star.

Do not forget the pod races. Ben Quadinaros will still have his day.

How ironic that the Force is not strong with Obie! One, Kenobe, would be very disappointed!

On the up side its apparently going to be all but destroyed in December. On the other hand one just has to love NASA and the boys who study the stars for a living, as we have not launched many new telescopes and most or our long distance probes have been out there for years its makes one wonder why this is only being discovered now......or are they building up a good deniability clause.

i was born atheist, i was even preaching atheism. then i had a out of body experience. i saw myself living this earth. and i saw myself in a cave people queueing. i didnt know what the queu was for . then i saw 2 different door i started to froze and panickying. they were 3 people sitting next to each other and wearing gold the one in the middle i couldnt see this face as it was cloudy. and my soul was directed into a boiling pot i enter the pot and got my earthling body back. i was now in a beautiful place i have never seen the place i was, was covered with glass.i only saw black people and spinach. now when i i galaxies, stars i become spiritual not religious. my story.

....and still people make statements like "there is no chance that life could exist elsewhere in the Universe".

Some may still suggest that our system is in fact a binary system (two suns/stars), Nibiru should clear that up if it isnt a ruse... =D Happy (almost) end of the mayan calander all!!! lol
