BlackBerry services collapse

2011-10-10 15:57

Cape Town - The Telegraph reported on Monday that a major fault at RIM has cut off millions of BlackBerry users across the world.

The fault was affecting consumers in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Users were unable to browse the web, use instant messages, or access other internet services such as e-mail.

A RIM spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

      Johan - 2011-10-10 16:18

      Totally agree with Slartibartfast.

      LJ Graey - 2011-10-10 16:23

Lol... That's probably because your NOKIA doesn't use RIM's servers Slarti, you chop. Or do you have a NOKIA with BIS? (Don't even want to know how you managed that if you do...)

      barry.gonin - 2011-10-10 16:35

  • Tolerant - 2011-10-10 16:00

TG for cheap, "unsmart" phones. Ha Ha.

  • Andrew - 2011-10-10 16:00

when will it be able to work again !!! T.I.A

      Frikkie - 2011-10-10 16:04

Yes... T.I.A... Even though RIM is situated in North-America and the European users are cut off as well... But lets blame Africa...

      willieman - 2011-10-10 16:09

@ Frikkie why blame Africa? would you kindly care to explain

      Frikkie - 2011-10-10 16:13

@willieman I'm referring to Andrew's comment in which he states T.I.A (This is Africa). Just saying that this has got nothing to do with Africa.

      Onestone - 2011-10-10 16:13

ja... lets blame it on appartheid!

      Side_Winder - 2011-10-10 16:18

      willieman........FAIL!!!!! WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

      Oddearring - 2011-10-10 16:27

Sorry to burst you bubble, but T.I.A. could also mean "Thanks in advance"

      Loofdellort - 2011-10-10 16:32

      It actually stands for Twit-Idiot-Andrew

      James3000 - 2011-10-10 17:08

Hey Andrew, Mr TIA, I'm sitting in the Netherlands boet and all the BBs are down here.

      LiciousDee - 2011-10-11 07:31

      its working now:)

      Andrew - 2011-10-11 10:14

My sincere apologies to all, my comment was not meant to offend anyone. I was about to take my phone in to get fixed anf then saw the article. i was just saying thanks for letting us know and that its not just my phone. T.I.A is meant to be Thanks in Advance.

  • Juanne - 2011-10-10 16:03

This is not relevant to me as Virgin Mobile does not provide data services to BB devices bought elsewhere. I can fortunately not experience this tragic temporary loss.

      texx - 2011-10-10 16:40

then why you commenting?? a little jealous of the power of the BB maybe ;-)

      LiciousDee - 2011-10-11 07:32

kwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa @ Texx you killed me bro!

      Juanne - 2011-10-11 09:54

      Ever heard of sarcasm, fools?

      Peregrine Fa - 2011-10-11 13:35

Tact is for people not witty enough to be sarcastic.

  • AdriaanAdams - 2011-10-10 16:03

Anyone interested in borrowing my iPhone for a few minutes...

      SkandaalZA - 2011-10-10 16:18

At least it's only BB's network that died

      LJ Graey - 2011-10-10 16:26

Lol... and waste all my airtime by simply switching it on? No thanx :P

      Linus - 2011-10-10 16:27

BB is coming to iPhone and other smart phones by the way...

      Stephan - 2011-10-10 16:40

Adriaan stupid there is nothing wrong with dialing and getting calls it's only BIS that's not working it's 2 different things eish!!! Peole think before you judge BB Apple can still go learn from BB

      GuyverXT9 - 2011-10-11 10:31

@Stephan: BlackBerries are sub-standard phones sold as smartphones. Anyone purchasing a BlackBerry should also have received a brick, to hit themselves over the head with. Check your contract, it should be in there somewhere.

  • Gamerforlife - 2011-10-10 16:03

This is why you stick to ANDROID !!!! Android FTW

      Pickle - 2011-10-10 16:11

And pay through your ass in Data charges.. I will rather suffer a day or two of downtime with my blackberry than pay the ridiculous amounts of money for data. =p

      CatvonH - 2011-10-10 16:29

i agree with (i'm in a bit of a) Pickle!

      Nathan Birkett - 2011-10-10 16:32

@Pickle, Android isn't for people like you, its for more tech orientated ppl who actually know what they talking about. Airtime isn't an issue to us because we know its well spent.

      Mike - 2011-10-10 16:35

Pickle, how much data do you actually pull on your phone? And how does that compare to R60 worth of data? But then people dont think like that do they....

      mullet - 2011-10-10 16:45

what does FTW stand for? these abreviations are interesting.. :)

      Gamerforlife - 2011-10-10 16:50

@Mullet FTW means For The Win

      JimBean@24.com - 2011-10-11 07:15

@ Mullet: FTW stands for For The Win. As in: HTC FTW !

      Sean - 2011-10-11 12:34

@Gamerforlife didnt you mean Android WTF? ;) GG BB!

  • Daemos1 - 2011-10-10 16:03

    :)

  • NJRobson - 2011-10-10 16:03

No Wonder my BB is unresponsive...

      Flee - 2011-10-10 16:18

NJ... No It just doesn't love you anymore... I think you should just come to terms with it... Its over.. Your Cute BB has dumped you... LOL

  • shelley - 2011-10-10 16:04

Thank you for the info, now i know why I have not been able access anything on my BB. I thought my BB was giving problems.

  • Bradyn Hopking - 2011-10-10 16:04

    iPhone for the win :)

      CatvonH - 2011-10-11 09:07

      iPoor ;-)

  • Ross - 2011-10-10 16:05

Why would anyone use a Blackberry?? (sick)

      k1dbl4ck - 2011-10-10 16:43

so they can proxy all their data traffic through one companies servers and freak out when it falls over.

      vn2701 - 2011-10-10 16:47

So we don't sound or look like the arrogant, irritating, obnoxious Apple users.....

      Ross - 2011-10-10 19:32

I'm sorry but i'm not an Apple user. I have a Galaxy S2. Android trumps them all.

      Picasso - 2011-10-11 07:43

@vn2701 - who's fault is it that you can not afford to pay a normal phone bill? BB is clearly the poorman's phone.

      vn2701 - 2011-10-11 15:04

My apologies Ross..... @ Picasso, who even mentioned phone bills? What are you on about?

      Picasso - 2011-10-12 12:48

The reason people choose BB is because of the free BBM and internet, that is because they can not afford to pay normal internet and messages fees. Capiche?

  • Rory - 2011-10-10 16:06

Oh god we all gonna DIE!!

  • Chris_Outram - 2011-10-10 16:07

I like the "A RIM spokesperson was not immediately available for comment" nor were they responding to e-mails :)

  • Roundana - 2011-10-10 16:08

pheewwww...have been struggling the whole afternoon with my BB internet...i hope this will be fixed soon though! eish!

  • joed25 - 2011-10-10 16:08

Well that explains it. Sorry Vodacom, if I could have gotten on Twitter, I was about to let you have it...

  • WinnieThePoo - 2011-10-10 16:08

If you buy a brick, expect it to act like a brick :-) Don't worry, there are plenty of Android phones to choose from ...

  • Nicolene - 2011-10-10 16:08

oh come on!! i just bought a freaking blackberry! do they want to tell me i wasted R2 000.00??!!! or am i getting my money back?

      Shistirrer - 2011-10-10 16:10

      Yes. You wasted R2000.

      Daemos1 - 2011-10-10 16:23

      Buy android next time

      WinnieThePoo - 2011-10-10 16:23

Wasted R2000 plus whatever petrol you used to get to the shop to pick it up :-)

      Rory - 2011-10-10 16:39

      oh nicolene........where to start.

      stack - 2011-10-10 16:41

ive had one for 5 years first time this has ever happened - you will love it !! welcome to the family :)

      texx - 2011-10-10 16:45

they lying, BB is the best phone on the market!!! once the network is back and running you will see and will be very impressed, welcome to the BB community

      Michael Matusowsky - 2011-10-10 18:15

All these android people sitting on their high horses... You realise Android has a ton of security issues? Yes they're a nice OS to pick from but they're like that hot prostitute whom everyone has slept with. I'd rather be disabled and be immune to infection than have the ability to contract something nasty. I *heart* my BB AND my iPhone :).

      Nicolene - 2011-10-11 08:16

thanks for the welcoming notes. :-) i feel better now that everything's working again.

      GuyverXT9 - 2011-10-11 14:24

@Micheal Matusowsky: yeah, whatever. you've got an iPhone, you should know better than supporting a crapberry.

  • Martin Hahmann - 2011-10-10 16:10

Ahhhh, finally the last kick in the butt I need to get rid of my USELESS blackberry and move onto a decent platform. Thank you Apple, looking forward to being lifelong friends. Blackberry, hope you spiral down a miserable hole of death...

Yup... I think they are all having a good laugh at all the "smart" phone users who don't feel so smart right now hahahahah

      vn2701 - 2011-10-11 15:10

Funny how the Blackberry users can still do what a normal Nokia can, even with the services down. You know.... sms and call.

hope they'll resolve the error in due course to avoid further distrubtions

  • Tassenberg - 2011-10-10 16:21

Wonder if this maybe has not to do with a system update to make them able to be RICA compliant, for AFAIK blackberry messages could not be intercepted the last I checked, and ICASA and government was putting pressure on them to sort out their systems. So wonder if they're not making some changes.

  • kdiokane - 2011-10-10 16:22

    This is nt on

      Flee - 2011-10-10 16:43

      like all the blackberry's WWahahahha

  • Gabiba - 2011-10-10 16:22

    ok, that explains everything.

  • CBCOZA - 2011-10-10 16:23

World? EMEA actually and 50% of users affected. Should be resolved soon and allow for packet recovery for a little while after. Everyone has problems at some point or another, whether BB, Iphone, Andriod, whatever. S*** Happens people, its man made technology, get over the mine is bigger than yours banter.

      WinnieThePoo - 2011-10-10 16:28

I've never had problems with Android. Vodacom maybe. Android nope. Probably because Android doesn't lock you into using "their" services like Blackberry does.

      CBCOZA - 2011-10-10 16:35

@WinnieThePoo Its data services, regardless of whether it being RIM infrastructure or InternetAPN (Carrier), you are still locked into using it for the the purposes you need a smartphone.

      WinnieThePoo - 2011-10-10 16:43

True, but you must admit that if I have a problem with data services on my Android with Vodacom, I can easily pop in an MTN sim. What are Blackberry users to do now?

      CBCOZA - 2011-10-10 16:50

@WinnieThePoo If only you new the truth about MTN. Daily stories are scary.

  • Tulani Tshaka - 2011-10-10 16:26

now i know it's not me but them...

  • Pumba - 2011-10-10 16:29

While this is all happening be sure to switch data services off. All usual e-mails etc will divert over normal networks and you will be charged by your network for data!

  • Investigator - 2011-10-10 16:29

When wall this issue be resolved and blackerrys ups and running again??

  • brok3news - 2011-10-10 16:30

    BB's aren't real smartphones anyways.

  • Dane - 2011-10-10 16:30

  • Marcus - 2011-10-10 16:33

Finaly!!! Nokia and iphone users have something bad to say about BB! look at them go!!! Please remember that in a day or two our BB will be restored and you will still be stuck with paying for data. Good luck ;)

  • Jimm636 - 2011-10-10 16:34

that's what you might call a bad RIM-job...

      Rory - 2011-10-10 16:44

  • Robin-Jay - 2011-10-10 16:40

  • siqebengu - 2011-10-10 16:41

Here is the official statement from RIM, the maker of Blackberry, regarding the service interruption: "We are working to resolve an issue currently impacting some BlackBerry subscribers in Europe, Middle East and Africa. We're investigating, and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused whilst this is resolved."

  • antiflag - 2011-10-10 16:43
