Buffalo bull sold for record price

2012-09-04 13:00

Johannesburg - A young buffalo bull has been auctioned for the record amount of R26m at an auction in Bela-Bela, according to a report on Tuesday.

The bull "Horizon" is the most expensive wild animal ever sold in SA, and fetched R8m more than the buffalo "Senatla", sold a year ago at a Thabazimbi auction, Beeld reported.

Norman Adami, spokesperson for the Stud Game Breeder's Association, told the newspaper that the record price was proof of people's faith in the game industry.

He said good quality game was an excellent investment, and that the industry was a sustainable one that was contributing around R10bn to the South African economy.

Over 1 000 people attended the auction at the weekend, which had a turnover of nearly R122m.

At the same auction, a pregnant buffalo cow from Nyumbu Game was sold for R5.2m.

Based on the picture above, this is an American Bison. Why on earth would we in South Africa want to breed with game not indigenous to Africa? Seriously?

What difference does it make, sagmoedige? Should we send back all animals then that were not originally indigenous to SA? That's a bit dof.

Just 1 bullet from some trigger happy hunter and there goes R26m. Hopefully this animal will be well protected and heavily insured. But I do think anyone spending that kind of money on an "buffalo" is 2 sandwiches short of a picnic.
