Durban - There were no climate change summit related crimes on Monday, police said on Monday afternoon.

"Everything is going smoothly so far. Not... a single conference-related crime report has been given to me today," Colonel Vish Naidoo said late on Monday afternoon.

The 17th Conference of Parties (COP 17) began at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre on Monday morning and is being attended by over 15 000 people.

Naidoo, the only police spokesperson for the conference, said all police officers deployed for the summit had been told to report criminal incidents.

"They have been told to either send me cellphone text messages or e-mails when something happens. Everything is under control," he said.

He said there had been no protests around the ICC on Monday. Activists usually organised protests during major conferences.

There was high police visibility in and around the ICC.

Naidoo said special courts were on standby 24-hours a day to deal with conference related crimes.

The aim of having certain courts on standby was to ensure that cases were finalised as quickly as possible, said Naidoo.

david.flewellen says... @Mathys: I presume you're a Christian? Then you should be familiar with the Old Testament's 7th Commandment, about bearing false witness? If the role of Christianity is to suppress and oppose science when that science contradicts scripture, then you'll have to forgive me for noticing the hypocrisy of the Abrahamic religions having "don't lie" as a commandment. For the record, I don't hate Christianity. Hate is a strong and wasteful emotion. I'm opposed to Christianity because it's basically just an ancient fairy tale, with no factual basis or evidence of its truthfulness. Which means it's basically just one big lie - and, as per your seventh commandment as well as the basic tenets of science, lies are morally wrong. Read the article...
