Da Vinci masterpiece showing age
Warsaw - An art expert says recent tests show a weakening and ageing of Leonardo da Vinci's 15th century painting Lady with an Ermine, which is housed in Poland's National Museum
Janusz Czop, the chief conservationist at the museum in Krakow, said on Monday that tests show the chestnut board it had been painted on has weakened due to it being eaten away by bark beetles over the centuries, and the painting has also suffered from a dense network of cracks.
More state-of-the art and non-invasive tests - such as computer tomography - are to be performed to help experts decide what kind of maintenance should be performed on the privately-owned masterpiece, Czop said.
He said the weakening was not related to the work's recent trips to exhibitions in the Spanish, German and British capitals.
