Johannesburg - An anthrax outbreak in the Kruger Park may cause the extinction of the Roan antelope after several rare animals were killed.

According to a Beeld report, 30 of the antelope were killed at the Mopani rest camp over the weekend.

The roan antelope is rare and there were only about 100 in the breeding camp prior to the outbreak.

Game wardens found the carcases after an inspection of the breeding project and tissue samples were collected to determine the cause of death and prevent the bacteria from spreading.

Anthrax is deadly to both humans and animals and a spokesperson for park said that the public should avoid contact with dead animals.

"Report such carcasses without delay at the nearest rest camp or game warden," said William Mabasa, spokesperson for the Kruger Game Park.
