ET stay home - Stephen Hawking

2010-04-26 09:41

London - British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking says aliens are out there, but it could be too dangerous for humans to interact with extraterrestrial life.

Hawking claimed in a new documentary that intelligent alien life forms almost certainly exist, but warned that communicating with them could be "too risky".

The 68-year-old scientist said a visit by extraterrestrials to Earth would be like Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas, "which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans".

He speculates most extraterrestrial life will be similar to microbes, or small animals - but adds advanced life forms may be "nomads, looking to conquer and colonise".

The Discovery Channel said on Sunday it will broadcast Stephen Hawking's Universe in Britain in May.

  • CFR - 2010-04-26 10:17

OK OK take me to your leader! Please stop the speculation and bring proof or else lets not waste any more time.

  • Krulkop - 2010-04-26 10:20

I fully agree that there are life beyond earth. But they are far more superior than us. We are probably morons in there eyes.

  • Jordan - 2010-04-26 10:22

    Oh...he finally saw 'Independence Day'.

  • NOTSH - 2010-04-26 10:33

He is no more qualified in that respect than anyone else. Just regurgitating old opinions.

  • cron - 2010-04-26 10:39

They are out there and here, we will soon learn more of them with a schock!

  • T - 2010-04-26 10:47

From one of the most complex and brilliant minds of our time. And one of the greatest physicists in history. Maybe read it and appreciate the view, instead of posting smart-arse remarks?

  • harmonic - 2010-04-26 10:50

You would think that any malevolent civilization would wipe themselves out before they became advanced enough to travel among the stars.

@CFR: The question isn't whether they exist (They do, somewhere. The math alone settles that)

The question is whether any are capable of (or just are) visiting or communicating with us.

  • Stu - 2010-04-26 10:59

These are not opinions based on guesses, the probability of ET life is actually huge. He's not saying that there IS life out there, he's saying that there probably is life out there. See drakes equation. Interesting stuff..

  • A Believer - 2010-04-26 10:59

Shame, isnt he also an atheist? Don't beleive in God because it cannot be proven? So how does he believe in Aliens that has never been proven to exist? Or observed? For goodness sake! Can one not believe in Science and God at the same time? Surely, its possible?

  • Neil - 2010-04-26 11:04

The problem would not be aggressive aliens, but us humans instigating a violent attack.

  • Jon - 2010-04-26 11:06

You people are a bunch of idiots if you can't grasp the context he was speaking in... It was an interview for a documentary, he didn't call a press conference.

  • ZION@NOTSH - 2010-04-26 11:18

If I had a choice as to whose opinions I would embrace then, inter alia, it would be Steven Hawking, Einstein and Charles Darwin. These guys think in places we will never be.

  • craig - 2010-04-26 11:18

Consideing the size of only the known universe to us, I reckon it's pretty naive to assume that in all that space, we're the only planet with life on it!

  • Fuzzy - 2010-04-26 11:33

When we have depleted earth's natural resources or face some other cataclsymic event that will force us to to start looking at another planets to live on and we find a suitable planet that happens to have life, or even intelligent life, we will be the alien nomads doing conquering and colonizing. Maybe Hawking has a point, therefore the aliens out there are just ignoring our communication attempts out of fear for being attacked :)

  • Matt - 2010-04-26 11:37

Agreed, it seems an awful waste of space otherwise.

  • El Classico - 2010-04-26 11:40

Aliens - you are more than welcome here- but for goodness sake leave your anal probes back home!!

  • Atheist@Believer - 2010-04-26 12:34

Since you opened the can of worms, lets eat.
Life in general exists (from the micro-organisms to gigantic whales), can be analysed and understood. The paranormal is only speculative. There is still no proof of ghosts, spirits or gods. Science gives us the ability to theorise an outcome before prooving it which it has done numerous times.

  • Philosopher - 2010-04-26 18:48

@Believer, if ET life is proven you religious freaks will find a way to reconcile it with your crazy belief system, just as you now say evolution is the method god used to create us.

  • aajj@Philosopher - 2010-04-29 15:34

I'm a Christian and have no need to reconcile evolution into my belief system. @ Atheist let's eat. Are you aware of the Anthropic principle? What is your take on it?

  • Lawrence - 2010-04-29 16:03

For someone who is supposed to be a genius, that was a rather stupid comment. When you consider the size of the universe, to assume that we are the only intelligent life is stupid. The chances are greater that there are other world humans living on planets similar to ours, and if they're advanced enough to visit our planet I'm pretty sure they advanced enough to to want to eat our brains. They almost certainly will have a much better understanding of the universe and their roles in it than we greedy like earthlings do.

  • Manny - 2010-04-30 09:49

@Lawrence. If they can visit our planet, sure, they are more advanced then us. But why do we always equate advanced to more civilised? That is exactly what the American Indians and other less advanced peoples thought just before they were slaughtered. "Oh these guys have nice shiny metals and hav big ships and fire sticks that go boom and kills something. Oh they are way better than us, no harm here." lol. But think of it, If the Earth had to expire/run out of resources, either through our own doing or other natural phenomena and we discover another planet with an advanced intelligence, but less advanced (& more important, militarily less advanced) than us, would we not consider invation? I would consider Hawkings hypothesis as better thought through then most and I am sure many of you will agree.

  • dave - 2010-06-03 10:11

    "Beam me up Scotty"

  • Area 51 - 2010-06-03 11:12

Considering some of the people working in our government, I'd say aliens are already here, but not more advanced.

  • peet - 2010-06-03 16:05

this is an educated man that say there is no live after death but there are aliens? please! his education made him sick!

  • JS - 2010-08-10 14:21

What makes his guessing more credible than the scriptures of the Bible? Sorry, he contradicts himself and many of you still prefer to believe his theories(unproved as you say the Bible is). What a joke! ..... and so we all believe what we want to believe.... don't we? Personally I think he is in the paralysed state because he is very influential and influences many people against the Bible/God/Christianity. I also believe that he might just be cured from his disease, should he become a reborn Christian and be outspoken FOR God/Christianity - and then go to someone who can REALLY heal with prayer. I don't say he will, I say he MIGHT be cured, and should that happen, I would very much like to hear all the non-believers making excuses for his recovery. YES, I really believe that God can let him walk. Maybe, most of us would prefer NOT to believe in a God in his condition, unless we saw the real bigger picture and stop being Gods ourselves.

  • terrythealien - 2010-09-02 12:34

We are already here ..... and watching very afraid!

  • Apples anyone - 2010-09-02 12:41

An apple tree produces apples, you wouldn't find just one apple amongst all the apple trees on the planet. Since we are here you could likewise deduce that the universe produces life forms. Whether its God behind it or not, that there are other life forms out there is logical.

  • Apples? - 2010-09-02 12:45

  • Ou Koos - 2010-09-02 12:48

Here in South Africa we have illegal and legal aliens. We have no God except money and rugby and each night you can hear the BIG BANG in Johannesburg streets...

  • TOUGH-AS-NAILS - 2010-09-03 07:52

they hail this guy as a genius and give him huge acolades and yet all his theory's and discovery and enlightenment seem in retrospect very similar to the gurglings of an infant( no reference to his condition intended )he could infact be an intellengent guy i guess as is the view of many, but trying to disprove something that you dont believe exists. come now.

  • Jakes - 2010-09-04 19:24

It depends what you classify as Aliens....
    Spiritual beings are also Aliens.
