Johannesburg - The Green Goal programme to ensure that the FIFA 2010 World Cup is environmentally friendly was launched on Thursday.

Local Organising Committee chief executive officer Danny Jordaan, Environmental Affairs deputy minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi and representative of the host cities signed a pledge committing them to ensuring a green event.

The pledge, signed at FIFA House, Nasrec, stated they would all support initiatives which addressed waste minimisation, emission reduction, energy efficiency and water conservation.

The LOC also launched the logo of the campaign, which is a black and white football imprinted with the map of Africa and held by green-coloured hands.

Jordaan said the green initiative would not only focus on the World Cup's impact on the environment. "It will also focus on how we can improve it by planting trees, managing waste and conserving water."

According to Mabudafhasi, the World Cup will also be used "as a platform to create awareness.

"The country is going to be a world class host and it needs to show a world class green profile. The greening will go on past the event. South Africa's green programme is to create awareness, which goes beyond a month of a sporting event... This is for the rest of our lives and generations to come," she said.
