'Gay' penguin finds female partner

2011-12-13 12:45

Toronto - It appears a female has come between one of Canada's celebrity couples.

Toronto's zoo split up a pair of male penguins whose affection for each other drew headlines last month and jokes about "Brokeback Iceberg".

The zoo said on Monday Buddy and Pedro have been officially separated and Buddy has mated with a female. Pedro has yet to get lucky, but officials say it's not for a lack of trying.

The birds' separation was one zoo officials said was necessary because penguins are an endangered species and the two needed to mate with females.

Curator Tom Mason describes their bond as social - not sexual - and says when the birds rejoin the general population, they are likely to stay with their female matches and go their separate ways.

Just leave the poor chap alone! He is already forced to stay in a zoo!!! So at least let him chose his own partner!

  • SamuraiMama - 2011-12-13 13:12

I wonder if the Moreletta NG Kerk's "Conversion Therapy" had anything to do with this? LOL

      Shirley - 2011-12-13 13:22

Quiet possible. Could also have been a fear of retaliation from Mugabe!

      jowza1 - 2011-12-13 13:26

  • andynct - 2011-12-13 13:14

So the survival of South African penguins depends on the breeding program at Toronto zoo? Seriously?

  • Mashudu - 2011-12-13 13:17

Really news24, was this necessary for us to know?

      SamuraiMama - 2011-12-13 13:27

YEAH! Coz what penguins do in the privacy of their tank is none of our business!!

  • Deon - 2011-12-13 13:36

It probably won't make the news in Nigeria. We miss our "comedian" from Limpopo or is he farming allready?

  • Lana-May - 2011-12-13 13:44

  • Cyrus - 2011-12-13 14:02

  • Fredster69 - 2011-12-13 14:51

How do they get to 'gay' animals. they are animals just existing together. No animal has gay tendancies

      Michelle - 2011-12-13 15:17

Couln't agree with you more. Ironic how humans want to give animals human tendencies.

      Cyrus - 2011-12-13 20:05

      Well said

  • Martin - 2011-12-13 15:09

    wtf?

  • jodi.kruger - 2011-12-13 15:15

Sweet :o) I wish them breeding success.

  • DieSeL - 2011-12-13 15:49

Headlines sell... The media will put up just about any cr@p as a headline just to get people to read the article. How are these penguins "gay"? Just coz they were together in an enclosure? They didnt choose which penguins there with them, did they? That was done by the zoo people.

  • emile.eley - 2011-12-13 16:22

    Good for him!

  • Nicci - 2011-12-13 16:36

Unnatural living conditions for animals (and humans) promotes unnatural behaviour. How many more 100's of years of proof do we need before we catch on?

      Shirley - 2011-12-13 17:00

Agree 100%! Prison is a lonely place!

  • Robin Dyers - 2011-12-13 17:01

    Profoundly boring

  • PyroSA - 2011-12-14 00:22

Were they punting for extra publicity and funding by using the gay angle? These two were buddies with no 'acceptable' female companions at a stage.
