Germany: Facebook must delete faces

2012-08-16 08:28

Berlin - A German data protection official has called for Facebook to delete biometric profiles of people stored without their explicit consent.

In short, he wants Facebook to delete users' faces from its databases.

The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection said on Wednesday that talks to bring Facebook's business practice in line with German and European privacy rules had failed.

Johannes Caspar said he is now re-opening a stalled probe of the California-based company "in order to find a legally sound solution with regard to the use of biometric data" that can be used to automatically identify individuals.

He says "Facebook will be obliged to delete this data unless it obtains approval by all concerned users".

Calls to Facebook representatives in London weren't immediately answered.

I have been following this emerging problem for some time now, and if the conspiracy theorists are anywhere near the mark, then CIA, FBI and others are using Facebook data to construct profiles of ordinary citizens that can be used to spy on them and ultimately target people whom they suspect of anti-American sentiment for arrest, elimination and control. All of this has frightening possibilities and scary consequences. It becomes even more worrying when we learn that the SA government is building a department to emulate the US endeavours. The more we can extract ourselves and retrieve our personal information from Facebook and its clones, the better.
