San Francisco - Google said on Wednesday it's launching a free e-mail service, 'Gmail', that will feature built-in search capacity and offer a gigabyte of free storage.
The privately held, Mountain View California-based search engine developer's e-mail product would compete against free services offered by Yahoo and Microsoft.
It will have 100 times more storage space than rivals, an e-mail search function - and in-mail ad links to generate revenue for Google, which operates the world's most popular search engine.
Google said in a press release that it plans to make the service available to the public in a few weeks.
Google's announcement comes amid continuing speculation that it's preparing to go public. Google has refused to comment on the rumours.
