Pretoria - The government will help with reconstruction of infrastructure on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, which was damaged recently by tidal waves up to eight metres high, said Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi on Monday.
Mufamadi, who is responsible for the national government's disaster management, will visit some of the affected areas on Tuesday.
"We will undertake an assessment of damage to the infrastructure and further assistance will be given from the national government to reconstruct and rehabilitate the affected areas", said Mufamadi.
Waves of between six and 10 metres pounded the KwaZulu-Natal coastline last weekend, causing considerable structural damage along the beachfront.
Margate, Port Edwards, Ballito and Umdloti were some of the worst-hit areas.
Local and district municipalities were considering declaring some the affected areas as local disaster areas.
