Barcelona - Environmental group Greenpeace was on Monday unfurling a banner on Barcelona's landmark Sagrada Familia church calling for action against climate change, ahead of a UN conference in the city.
"More than 20 Greenpeace activists are in the process of hanging the 600-square-metre (6,500-square-foot) banner on the Sagrada Familia ... to mark the beginning of the United Nations summit on climate," it said in a statement.
"World leaders make the climate call," said the banner in English on the Antoni Gaudi-designed church which is as yet unfinished.
Representatives of some 180 countries kick off five days of climate talks in Barcelona on Monday, the last UN session before a December conference in Copenhagen tasked with beating back the planetary threat of global warming.
But two years of negotiations set in motion by the so-called Bali Action Plan have fallen terribly short, and hopes for a legally binding agreement by year's end have faded.
"Greepeace reminds world leaders that there is still time to find an agreement to save the climate during the upcoming summit in Copenhagen," Greenpeace said.
